My A Level project began by exploring socio-political art. I started investigating artists such as Don McCullin, Kehinde Wiley, and Shepard Fairey and how they convey political messages through art. This eventually led me to base my work around Britain’s poverty crisis – addressing issues such as the Universal Credit System, child poverty, and the power of generosity. I was shocked during my research to find that over a quarter of children were living in poverty during lockdown, and I wanted my final project to bring attention to this issue. Going into mixed media, I made use of shock adverts from charity campaigns to reveal the true realities of the poverty cycle and address the lack of government effort to remove children from it. My final piece aims to challenge the viewer’s perceptions of charity and poverty in Britain, showing the impact of generosity which can help those in need to succeed and be self-reliant, breaking out of the poverty cycle.
